Well, bagpipes were really fun to play in a group and such, it's just that there's not a whole lot you can play as far as musical styles go (one key, and only 9 notes). Plus, I have a 3 1/2 year old and a newborn at the house, and I can't just say "hmm...it's 10pm, let's pull out the bagpipes and play a few tunes". Since they are about 100db or so, the whole house would be awake!  Plus, since they aren't tuned to A=440, you can't really play them with other instruments unless you tune them specially to do that.
So, I still love bagpipe music (and I still have a very nice set of Sheperd bagpipes in my closest), but I'm going to learn violin
