A Violoncello Piccolo is a small cello with five strings. What the exact size was in Bach's time was not certain, but it could be a very small cello that looked like a big viola that was played on the "wrong side" of the shoulder. But it also could be as large as a 7/8 cello.

I just purchased her new Bach Suites 4 CD set at She plays the Suites with a normal, carbon, baroque and piccolo cello. Amazing stuff.
The 52 page booklet is a very interesting read. There are even sound analysis in there.
