MusicXML is a very important initiative, not just for composers, but also for the scholarly study and presentation of music as well. Consider all of the different markup schemes such as kern, MuseData and others, in which music editions appear. A robust, universal markup that translates into notational programs and audio rendering engines alike can only only benefit the wider dissemination of many types of music. What I would like to see is an encoding format that does for music what Unicode has done for fonts. MusicXML is, of course, not there yet, but perhaps it is the strongest contender.
