Well, you'd launch a recording tool to capture the mic audio. It would save it as a wav file which you would then convert to mp3.
Actually, now that I think about it some more, Acid Studio would cost you a bit more, but would give you a lot more flexibility. It's only $57 at newegg.com

This would basically give you everything you need to record audio and then burn mp3.
Acid Xpress is actually FREE now:
http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/do...ep1.asp?catid=1
however, I don't know if it allows you to encode to mp3. Jee or YKB might know.
That site also has links to a trial version of Acid Music Studio.
You could always play around with Xpress, and then buy the studio version if it's too limited for you.

In Acid Pro I created WAV or WMA files.
Either format can be used to create audio CDs using Roxio (which came with my Dell).

I think you'd be happier with some decent studio software then. Acid isn't that expensive. (like <$60 mail order) You could download the free version with the manual to get an understanding of the interface and use and such, or try out the trial version of the studio.
The advantage of Acid or Sonar and such is that it allows multi-track recording, recording with MIDI backing tracks, etc etc etc.
jeeViola uses Acid. I use Sonar, but they both do about the same thing I believe.
Some free training videos on Sony's site, too:
