Default Ashokan Farewell

Queen I wonder if Jay Unger who composed the Ashokan Farewell in the past decade would release his copywright to allow VZM to arrange it for Quartet. I purchased his original transcription for Violin that was part of the public's demand for such a transcription after it was used for a PBS series on the Civil War. The original recording was dated 1983 and included in a collaborative effort of Jay Unger, Matt Glaser (Dept. Head of the Strings Department at Berkeley School of Music), Russ Barenberg and Evan Stover. It was originally recorded as a selection on the 1983 Album titled Waltz of the Wind. I have heard it performed and recorded as a Waltz instrumentally with credit for composing given to Jay Unger. Maybe a mere arrangement by VZM with the appropriate credit for composition would find favor with Unger but it would have to be granted by Unger for release of Royalties if it is arranged and offered for sale and profit by VZM. Nevertheless, the Harmony for Violin and Viola are rather easy for a quartet to work out. An understanding of arranging the Base Clef for Harmony would be required for Cello, but most Cellist have had to make their own parts within a group as a group trial and error process. The tuning in fourths of the contrabass is the area that would be problematic for one to arrange without the outstanding knowledge and experience of someone like VZM. However, as it may easily be considered traditional, and typical of the National Music Period that Dvarok , Schubert, and possibly Sarasate that resulted in music just now considered open domain, a group arrangement would be well within the confines of interpretation of modern traditional music. With a group of like minded instrumentalists that are committed to play together and who get along well, this would be a fun type effort to undertake over a period of weeks. The hornpipe solos by Yo Yo Ma on Appalachian Journey is an example. However, one of the up and coming young composers of our day, Edger Meyer played with the trio and was available to work these type obstacles out. Just a thought.
