Did I get taken for a ride?

I recently bought a new flute of Craig's list. The price seemed reasonable, and the person selling the instrument claimed that it was custom-made for someone else who then didn't want it. He also claimed that the flute was manufactured in the Selmer factory, implying that the brand I was buying was made by Selmer. Since I don't know much about flutes, I went ahead and bought it. The flute brand turned out to be Roy Benson, and I can't find much about them on the internet. So now I'm afraid I have a crappy flute. Mind you, I've never even played before this, so my goal wasn't to get something incredibly nice, but rather just to have something to learn on. Any thoughts?

Hi I would take it to someone that knows more about flutes you might be luckly it could be ok .if you can get a scale of all the notes fairly easy then thats ok to start with .you might find as you get better that you need to up grade. my teacher told me just to buy a new head joint when i get to about grade six. i play a pearl flute which only cost £350.00 new and plays fine the music shop i went to were really helpful i would try a shop first then look for a bargain later on
