Hi all!

I hope this is the right forum to post this in...

I'm an architecture student, and our current project is to design a music studio. Part of our assignment is to explore what musicians (a.k.a. the client) need in a studio space.

Before I went to college for architecture, I grew up playing viola, so I have an idea of what sort of spaces in the studio might be required. However, I'm looking for somewhat unconventional ideas about what may be needed or wanted in such a building.

It is to include a concert hall, a recording space and practice studios.

I was wondering, what do you like or appreciate (or dislike) about current studio spaces, and what kind of spaces or features would you like to see integrated into a studio?

Any replies or info would be much appreciated.

Well, besides the fact to be sound-proof, I would suggest the following (my ideal "future-utopic" studio):

1. The ability to change the acoustic response by using something like the famous Helmholtz Resonance devices.

2. The ability to have an efficient light positioning system to read music in any possible condition.

Yeah, for the hall, lighting and good acoustics are definitely a must. As far as like, practice rooms go...they need to be small, but big enough to resonate in. Sound panels are good for the people outside the room, but really aren't that great for the musicians, as they suck up all the sound. You can test out the amount of room by fitting a grand piano into one corner of the room, and then sitting a chair, stand, and, say, a tuba in the remaining space. If there's no room for the musician to pace around some, it's not big enough. I like for practice rooms to have a high ceiling, but that's just my preference, as it gives more room for the sound to resonate. Recording studios...I have no clue. Never been in one. But I do find that the more echoey (I guess that's a word) a place is, the better the recording turns out. But again, that's my own preference as a flute player. It depends on the person really, I guess.

Hi, I've been in some "recording" places, they've got very very thick doors, and a small room on one side for the person recording, with a microphone. If the person recording has headphones on, he can hear everything the people in the other room are saying to him, like advice or something... the walls are very thick, and in the room next to it there's like a large window and you can see the person recording, so there's got to be a lot of space for a very large desk, couple of computers, lots of buttons for sound manipulation, a couple couches, some keyboards, and a few percussion instruments.
I hope this will help. Also, make sure the walls are sound proof! I've had enough of having my guitar lesson while there's a trumpetist right next door.

I like to feel at home where I am performing. I do not want a stuffy room.

I am so fascinated with music studios. I like to visit different studios and check its instruments and design. I honestly like a studio that has this elevateg stage. However, I dont like it to be too elevated. It can be 5-10 inches elevated if possible. That is elevated but not too much. Also, I like the design to be a bit dark. I mean the walls and all..
