Default Why Play Viola?

Why do you play the viola?

Because you like the sound?
Because it's easier?
Because the violin is too small?
Because high pitch noises drive you nuts?
Because you couldn't afford the Cello?
Because the Cello is too big for your bicycle?

Because it's whatever I feel like I wanna play...Gosh!

I played the violin at first, then switch to the viola team after trying someone elses viola. I prefer the sound and the size suits me better.

How long did you play violin before switching? How long have you played viola? What finally made you make the change?

I'm a new violin student (i.e., under <1 year), and starting as an adult, so I was just curious how/when people make the change. Do most violists start as violinists?

I've never put a viola up on my shoulder, so I don't really know how different it would feel.

Why do I play the viola? That's easy...because I don't. I've actually always thought it would be really cool to be able to play the violin. One time several years ago a family came to our church and they had like 6 kids and they all played some kind of instrument. A few of them played the violin and i thought it sounded beautiful!

I started violin when I was 8.
I was 29 when I got my 1st viola.
I think most violist start as violinist because they start on the violin as a child.

I started viola for several reasons.
1. It would make our family have a real string quartet.
2. Escape the ordinary. (Although it's not always easy to be a butt.)

Haha! I played bass clarinet in high school...our band director always referred to us, the bassons, and baritone sax as the 'armpit of the band'. Such suffering
