Actually, it's pretty true. I play piano, have played for 4 years self taught for 3 of the four. I'm the substitute pianist at church so i have to practice a lot. I also play (or attempt to play) the flute. I started on Monday or Tuesday this week, i'm teaching myself that too. I'm really getting frustrated at my flute, though, cuz no matter how hard I try or how much i practice I can't get it to sound right!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you messed around with the headjoint any? Sometimes rolling in/out will help you produce a better sound. Also, if it's open hole, make sure you are covering the holds. Having a correct position can change everything. Watch yourself in the mirror to make sure you are playing straight across, too. If you play too far rolled in, then you will block of the airstream and nothing will come out. Too far rolled out, and your airstream will miss the hole and nothing will come out. Play around with your positioning some.

I've tried rolling it in and out and still have the same problem. I can't get the F or Eb to sound right. I can occasionally but only when i play with it a lot, when i'm trying to play something i can't get it to come out. What's "open hole"? And what holes would I cover?

An open hole flute has keys with holes in them. If you don't cover the holes on the keys, you can't really play very much.
Um...I say go take a lesson with a flute instructor in your area. That would be your best bet to figuring out what's wrong. Pay close attention to what it feels like when you finally get F and Eb out...once you figure out what it is that you are doing differently, try to imitate that every time you attempt it.
Which octave of F and Eb? If I know the octave, I may be of some help.

Um, the F on the top bar, the highest F on the staff and the Eb right below that one. I would love to take lessons but I don't think I can afford it right now.

Oh...I had problems with those two when I first started also...so you're not alone. But you haven't been playing long, so you'll figure it out. Just play around with it until it works...then memorize what it feels like. Are you fingering it right?
Fingering:
F: 123 4O6 P (erm...the numbers are fingers that go down, the circle means it's lifted...P means pinkey. A space means no pinkey)
Eb: O23 456P
Are you using those fingerings?

Yeah, it's hard to find the time to practice...especially as school gets more and more hectic (which is what's happening to me lately...it's happening to EVERYONE in our band)
