Last night at church we shared testimonies and special music and Dad and I played People Need The Lord, me on piano and Dad on the harmonica. We hadn't practiced in months except for twice before church so we kinda messed up a little but it sounds all right. I'm just thankful that a certain someone wasn't there, otherwise I'd have completely messed it up!

Yeah, problem with oboe is, there are too many people out there that don't know how to make oboes sound good; they sound like dying ducks. When the right people play them, though, they are awesome instruments. (I have one of the best EVER High School oboists in my band)

Of course, it depends on whether you mean top 5 to play yourself, or top 5 to listen to.
My top 5 that I spend my time playing:
1. Tuba
2. Ophicleide
3. Serpent
4. Euphonium
5. Harp

But even this can be challenged: top 5 you LIKE to play for fun, or top 5 you are competent at playing, or top 5 you find easiest!

Top 5 I like to play for fun
1. Tuba
2. Euphonium
3. Recorder
4. Harp (but only after at least one glass of wine)
5. Piano ( but only after at least two glasses of wine)

Top 5 I am competent at
1. Tuba
2. Serpent
3. Ophicleide
4. Cimbasso
5. Euphonium

Top 5 I find easiest
1. Tuba
2. Ophicleide
3. Cimbasso
4. Serpent
5. Euphonium

Top 5 I like listening to, played as a solo instrument
1. Cello
2. Tuba
3. Harp
4. Recorder
5. Voice

... My beloved piano has been constantly left out... Now here's why it's the best in all rankings:
  • Fun ---> imagine playing Joplin's ragtime on there, or Liszt's second Hungarian Rhapsody.
  • Comfortable ----> You sit down while playing
  • Most pleasant sound ----> unlike the instruments mentioned above, unless the piano is dreadfully out of tune, its sound will always be delightful (even if you're a disagreeable player). While to make an oboe or viola sound good, it must first of all be tuned, and the player must be remarkably good.
  • Accompaniment & Melody ----> The piano provides every mean for achieving at least a pleasant song. Other instruments require an accompaniment, for they sound obnoxious without (viola, euphonium...etc).Others instead need a melody (percussion). The piano, has all these qualities, and it takes up just one person to play it well.
  • Any level of competence---> You don't have to be Beethoven in order to play something nice on the piano; even beginners are well off. While if you, as a beginner, take up the violin, well... it will sound as a drunken puma falling in a well and being skinned in the meanwhile.
(hands) --> pianist's hands are the most handsome of all musicians'.
