Default need new viola

Im looking for a good 15"-15.5" viola in the $3,000-$6,000 range that would last me through college. Any suggestions??

You didn't mention where you are. Are there any good string shops in your town? Would certainly help to be able to test things out 'live'. I agree with YKB and Q that Shar Music (shar.com) and Southwest Strings (swstrings.com) would be a good place to start browsing. Not sure what their trial policy is on instruments. I know Shar is good about the way that you can trial bows.

I was looking at my local Austin shop and they offer a 30 day money back guarantee, but I didn't see any policy regarding trialing them, though. I have the "Romanov" model violin from violinsetc.com, and it's pretty nice. They have a similar model for viola that is $1300. They import these directly from the makers, so it's their own label. I know stringworks.com does something similar.

That price range might be a little low for a 'hand made' viola (something like this http://www.townsendviolins.com/pages/2/index.htm), but I'm not sure on that. David Burgess site http://www.burgessviolins.com/ (another maker)

Maybe jeeViola can throw in some advice.
