Video TranscriptionThe quartet was playing in a series in Northern California and it had been arranged that we would each stay in homes provided by donors. After a bit my colleagues came by to pick me up for a rehearsal but before leaving we sat and chatted with the owner of the home. I asked him what line of work he was in and then asked about his interest in classical music. He went on to say that he serves as a judge on a few competitions. At that point I looked more closely at him and realized that he was the judge at a competition that smiled before asking me to play a Paganini caprice after I'd already played a very long program. I didn't play it very well at all so didn't go on to the next round. So of course I brought it up that I was that violinist and so enjoyed the fact that he turned red.
