Bach as a person
I was thinking that music (may) often reflect the personality of the composer. What kind of person was Bach. Was he known to be arrogant, happy, moody, intellectual?
Best regards

Hello gonrol and thank you for your post.
Well, it's difficult to say. When I read one of his biographies in the past, I remember I got a good picture of him, he had several children and a very intense life, I don't think he was arrogant and neither too much intellectual, actually those attributes are more pertinent to romantic or pre-romantic composers such as Beethoven, Liszt and so on... (this is just my thought).
Anybody has more information?
Thank you again.
Best.

Hello everybody!
Well I generally agree that the character of the composer influences the music he writes, but I think this is mostly true for the composers after 1750-1800. Baroque had a very strict style in contrast with classical and romantic music which let the composer express his personality more freely.
However, if you are intrested, you can go to www.bach-cantatas.com/Topics/Personality.htm

Bach as an individual
Bach was part of a descendance of composers. Simply everyone in his family was a musician. But he was a genius, and infact became famous for all the maths, algorithms, harmonics and counterpoints he used. From what I have read, he was a very intelligent person with a big and prosperous family, although he didn't really have a happy childhood. He was optimistic, and took care of his family... a remarkable character.
