Actually, it's the same size as a cello, just more strings.

yes wikipedia always has the answers
basically, summing up the wikipedia article, the viola da gamba differs from the cello in that it has 6 strings, tuned in various ways, it has frets, and it uses a different kind of bow, held differently. the viola da gamba is the ancestor of the modern double bass. Bach wrote a set of viola da gamba sonatas that are usually played on the double bass.
About the Bach cello suite editions: cello.org has a great article comparing all the editions http://www.cello.org/Newsletter/Articles/jsbach.html

A Violoncello Piccolo is a small cello with five strings. What the exact size was in Bach's time was not certain, but it could be a very small cello that looked like a big viola that was played on the "wrong side" of the shoulder. But it also could be as large as a 7/8 cello.
A good read is a blog of Josephine van Lier. http://josephinevanlier.blogspot.co...01_archive.html
I just purchased her new Bach Suites 4 CD set at www.josephinevanlier.com She plays the Suites with a normal, carbon, baroque and piccolo cello. Amazing stuff.
The 52 page booklet is a very interesting read. There are even sound analysis in there.

I've thought of modifying my cello for 5 strings, only difficulty is making an extra peg and tail...i have some ideas (of course theres not much point until ive learned to play )

If i modified a 'violoncello' do you think it would still be called a cello?
