Cello is #1

Nobody has posted anything about celli, so here's the post declaring the wonderfulness of the instrument.

Can't think why noone has written anything about celli. Much the best instrument. I just wish I had started it years ago instead of sticking to the piano. I love that too but it's lonely. With the cello I play in an amateur orchestra and a trio as well as having lessons. It's so much more pleasure.

I don't play cello, but I love listening to it!! It's one of my favourite instruments. I spent most of my childhood in the town where Pau Casals was born!!!

I love his song of the birds. What do you play?

Hey! "El Cant dels Ocells"!! Pretty, isn't it? But it's actually not his, it's a Catalan traditional he arranged and popularised while he was in exile in France after the Civil War here in Spain. It's one of my favourite pieces, and it really does sound lovely with a cello!!

I know that, given the circumstances, I ought to be playing cello , but I play piano, violin, recorders and harmonica.

I know it wasn't originally his and I have heard it elsewhere but I always think of it as his. I have a cd of Casals playing which is fascinating, but I can only listen to it in the car as the background noise is so bad even though it's remastered. You don't notice the background so much in the car. Do you play a lot of baroque music? Most people who play recorders seem to.

Yes, my recorder repertoire is basically medieval and baroque. Telemann, Vivaldi and so on. I can't really help it!!! But I quite like baroque stuff. In fact, Vivaldi is one of my favourite composers... What about his concerto for cello, strings and harpsichord RV 415?? Isn't THAT beautiful??

Yes it is. I love Baroque music anyhow. At a cello course I go to in France in the summer there is a baroque course at the same time and we play with them sometimes. Some of those recorders are huge.

Hehe yes the bass and tenor recorders are quite big... I play down to tenor because I don't have a bass and anyway it wouldn't be of much use since it's not soloist... I do wish I could play it, though!! There's also the other extreme, the sopranino, which is tuned in F, four steps up the soprano, and it can be really annoying when not played right!!!
