Hmmm. Not that keen on the very high ones. But then I wouldn't play the cello if I liked high pitched instruments

Well, I don't know. They're all different and have different effects. Although it's true that low pitched instruments sound sometimes more peaceful, in lots of pieces the piccolo, for instance, could not be spared. Personally I like both, the low pitched and the high pitched.

I'm actually more of a jazz bass guy... but that may be because I am vocally a bass. Anyway the piccolo in my band is always playing loud and annoying, they say that trumpets are egotistical, but if you put together all of our brass instruments egos (4 Trumpets, 1 Trombone) it would fall about ten times short of this guys ego.

my favorite cello piece
I am a cellist, and yes it's a beautiful instrument. I must say that so far I LOVE Hadyn Concerto in C Major. I also LOVE the double concerto by Vivaldi (I think that's in G). All throughout grade school and highschool I was a bit embarassed by the cello because of it's size. All my friends either didn't play an instrument or they played the flute, clarinet, or piano. Now, I do love it. It's a part of me and I'll never stop playing it. For those of you out there who love the cello and would like to learn...it's never too late.
Many happy cellists,

Vivaldi's Double Concerto is in G minor, though I believe its notated in D minor...key signatures hadn't been solidified in Vivaldi's time (I could be wrong though)
And the Haydn CMajor is a great composition indeed, though my personal favourite without question is the Elgar E minor
