 | Nice transcription, high skill level by George Hunter on June 3rd, 2009 |
| I have been a professional violist for years and I must say that this transcription is pretty hard to play but not impossible! We can easily compare to the hardest viola repertoire, but from my point of view, Walton or Hindemith concertos are much more difficult! | | | Too High an Octave by Tim Meushaw on June 3rd, 2009 |
| I agree with the first comment; the transcriber of this piece must have been a violin player. The preview of the first page doesn't do it justice; on the next two pages, a grand total of 13 measures are in C-clef, and even then they're mostly on the G string. 13 notes in the *entire piece* even use the C string. Most of the piece is on the A string, and require third position or higher. This is a poor transcription for viola. Luckily, I knew that going in and bought another arrangement (Leonard Davis, nearly identical to Robin de Smet's from what I could tell) separately.
I still bought the version here for the MP3s and MIDI piano files so I could play solo; it's all in the same key, so they work together, it's just the other arrangements are an octave or two lower. It's really good for that, but if you're expecting viola sheet music, you'll have to get that elsewhere. I gave 3 stars, averaging between 1 star for the sheet music and 5 stars for the accompanying music files. | | | Kol Nidrei for viola by anonymous on September 23rd, 2008 |
| the arrangement for viola is not very true to the original cello version, and most of the time everything is put in very high positions in the g-clef - which doesn't give justice to the full sounding lower register of the viola...I found another arrangement by Robin de Smet, where a much bigger part is in the lower register, thus getting closer to cello-like sound. | Add your own review!
