So do you know where sound comes from?
Where sound comes from on the violin?
What I mean by that is have you ever wondered how the sound is made on the violin?
And no I don't mean by using the bow!
OK well first of all we need to know that sound is produced when an object vibrates the air around it.
So to make that happen on the violin, it works like this.
First of all the first object that we need to make vibrate is the string.
We do this by plucking or bowing it and doing this makes the bridge vibrate.
And the bridge takes that vibration and transmits it to the top of the violin.
Now that the top is vibrating we need to be sure that its doing so all over.
This is where the bass bar comes in. Its attached to the bottom side of the top and distributes the vibrations equally throughout.
Now the vibration from the top is given to the sound post which transmits the vibration to the back of the violin.
At this point the whole violin is vibrating and this causes the air inside the violin to vibrate, as I said it should at the beginning, and this creates a sound.
To get out of this box, the interior of the violin, the sound comes out through the F holes.
And just like that the violin sounds.

Wondering if anyone has found or made a video to show how to achieve smooth bow changes at the frog and how to make it sound like one really long bow changes - with no discerable bow changes? I checked out the answers and the videos below since 9/15/23, but could not find anything exactly on point.

Good question, Sidney. Actually, we are currently missing a video on that very specific topic, on the violin.

We do have a video on bow changes on the cello, but of course, it doesn't completely apply to the violin:

https://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/experts/joseph/bow-changes/

But it could give good hints.

I'd suggest Prof. Fitzpatrick's excellent video on "figure eights," which I think could help with what you are trying to accomplish a great deal:

And I am sure Prof. Fitzpatrick will be happy to add any other suggestions to this discussion.

I hope this helps!

I am looking for a video to show how to achieve smooth bow changes at the frog, and how to make it sound like it is one very long bow.

Hi Sidney, and welcome here!

Before Prof. Fitzpatrick chimes in, I'd suggest the following videos that can help with bow movement and smoothness (I am a pro violinist as well, so I am sure these videos can help):

https://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/experts/william/figure-eights/

https://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/experts/william/bow-parallel-to-the-bridge/

Prof Fitzpatrick: Anything else am I missing?

Thanks again to everyone Smiley Face

Besides $$$ ... Quality of tone, quickness of the response, even color throughout, projection of sound, etc ... And all of this is mitigated by what the player is looking for and ... And then there is the bow ...........

Very clear explanation. Thank you.
