I was at a summer camp in Binghamton NY with the Lenox Quartet. I was place as 2nd violinist in a piano quintet which meant to me this meant that I was the worst violinists there. Finally I was put in a Beethoven string trio, which I thought was a big step up. We played in class and a student said: "You know Bill I can see that you love the music, it shows in your facial expressions and your gestures. My problem though is that I can't hear it!" I was stunned and for the next 20 minutes or so the comments just got worse. After the class my coach put his arm around me and said: "Don't take it so hard. When I was at Juilliard I didn't know how to turn a phrase either!" And the knife that was in my back went even deeper.

I personally believe all those other musicians were just jealous of you!
