Rating: 5 Very good edition, but could do with some changes. by Tosh Hayashi * VSM MEMBER * on March 2021
On balance I like the edition of Intro and Rondo Capricciosso a lot. But like many editions, I wish the editors would leave out a lot of their preferred fingerings, since in a lot of instances the best fingerings for an individual depends on various things...such as the size of their hands and lengths of their fingers and how they wish a particular passage or phrase to sound. Indeed, one of my pet peeves is that often there is too much "shifting" up and down when
just staying in the same position would suffice. Another pet peeve is that editors don't recognize that often it's best to stay in the first position, since that position sounds better, clearer, and more brilliant than a lot of the higher positions. Also, how the music is phrased etc. is often just an editor's opinion, since if one looks at "different" editions of the same music, one will find plenty of differences, for example whether to start up or down bow, or as to how many notes should be contained in a bow stroke, etc. I guess I prefer editions that keep the editing to a bare minimum.
